Marquette & Bessemer No. 2 (2)
Who am I?
Thanks to MikeM for an excellent suggestion and several members of the Yahoo! Car Ferry Group for identifying the ship as the railroad car ferry Marquette & Bessemer No. 2 (2). The ship was launched as a car ferry in 1910 and was cut down to a pulpwood and crane barge in 1944. The ship was renamed the Lillian in 1948 and scrapped in 1997.

This looks like one of the old Lake Michigan carferries, cut down into a scow. The vertical bow, the location and shape of the pilot house, and the tapered or flared rear end, similar to the gate end of the ferries, all remind me of them. Seems that was their usual fate too. If you research the history of the C&O or Ann Arbor RR ferries, you might find a matching picture of one in its new life.
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the tip! I posted the photo to a carferry group on Yahoo. Sure enough, several people identified the ship. Thanks again for a great suggestion!
Cool! Glad I could help.
