Vintage Photos Depicting Unidentified Ships Of Yesteryear

I began my interest in vernacular photography by a chance acquisition of over 10,000 negatives dating from the late 1920's through the early 1970's. Luckily, I knew what I had was something more than "someone's old pictures." This cache of old images became the impetus for me to create two Photoblogs: Ookpik’s Negativity and Mystery Ships Of The Great Lakes. Ookpik’s Negativity contains photos that I would like to know more about while Mystery Ships Of The Great Lakes features photos of ships that I am trying to identify.

Wow! I have been searching for years for any information regarding the MS CIANDRA. My name is Ciandra Lois Cooke (nee Bonnell) and I was named after the MS CIANDRA in 1958. My grandfather, Capt. Sebastiano Sisty, piloted the MS CIANDRA from the Welland Canal through the Great Lakes to Michigan in 1957. When he harboured her at the Toronto Harbour that year he asked my mother to come onboard to show her this fantastic half freight/half passenger vessel. The German owner was on board at the time and explained to my mother that he had named his two ships after his daughters "Ciandra" and "Colonia"...Ciandra being a name of ancient Roman heritage. My grandfather was so impressed with this ship that he asked my mother, should she give birth to a girl to name her "Ciandra"....and so the story goes! Thank you so very much for posting this site...what an honour. If you have any other information/photos that can be shared I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

My name is Tom Cooke - Ciandra's son. Myself, my brother, my mom and a good friend of I are sitting here in our kitchen talking about family names and so the MS Ciandra story came up. I was compelled to look up on the Internet what I could find, having recalled in the past that I found some information. I was pleasently suprised to see that the two of you have dialogued in the past. My brother even mentioned that the two of you had been in touch via Twitter. Alas, the Cookes are busy and sometimes forgetful!
