Makaweli

Who am I?

Thanks to Daniel of Rimouski, Quebec, Canada for identifying the ship as the Makaweli. The vessel was named the Cowee when it was launched in 1919. In 1922, the ship was sold to the Matson Navigation Company of San Francisco, California and renamed the Makaweli. On December 7, 1941 while at port in Pearl Harbor, the ship was damaged during the attack. In 1946, the ship came to the Great Lakes when the vessel was sold to Lakeland Tankers Limited of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The ship continued to service the Lakes until it was scrapped in 1967. I recall seeing the Makaweli a number of times in the 1960's on the lakes. I was told at that time that the ship was in Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941 and that there was a plaque in the wheelhouse stating that.

I never had that verified in any way and I find it interesting that it is confirmed here.

I WAS HER THIRD MATE IN 1955.

THE OLD LOG BOOK WAS ABOARD STATING HER ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE FROM PEARL HARBOUR.

I DO NOT RECALL SEEING A PLAQUE OF ANY NATURE.

I could claim a place in history if the Makaweli was at Pearl Harbour during the attack.
I was on this ship a number of times in the mid 1960's when it called at the Shell wharf in Bronte (Oakville), Ontario.
At the time,I wasn't aware of the Pearl connection.
However, I later wrote to the Museum at Pearl and their reply was that the ship was inbound, but a few days out.
This seems correct; I have poured over numerous maps of the harbour on Dec 7,1941: none show the Makaweli.

I WAS A MATE ON THE MAKAWELI AND CONFIRM THAT SHE DEPARTED PEARL HARBOUR SOME 12 HOURS BEFORE THE ATTACK.

THE TIME AND DATE ARE NOTED IN THE LOG BOOK WHICH ABOARD DURING MY TIME AND IT MUST BE HELD SOME WHERE AND BY SOME ONE.

GAD, SHE WAS LIKE AN OLD WHALE.
