Regent
Who am I?
Thanks to Tonylast for identifying the ship as the Regent. The ship was built in 1934 for the Gulf Oil Corporation by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship held 16,000 barrels of oil. After serving Gulf for 40 years, the ship was sold to Nicaruga. In October of 1983, a fire broke out aboard the vessel and the ship sank near Bluefields City, Nicaragua. The aft end looks like a passenger ship; converted into a tanker? Is that the stack of a tug behind this boat, or is it self-powered?
Hi Mike,
This is indeed an unusual picture. I would imagine the vessel is some type of ship converted into a barge. The vessel appears to be going under its own power, as no tow rope is present. It is hard to tell if the smoke stack is part of the vessel in question or a vessel alongside it. In any event, the stack logo appears to be a “C” or a “G.”
