George A. Sloan
Who am I?
This Mystery Ship appears to be a mystery no more! Originally identified by MikeM and The Rock as either the Robert C. Stanley or the George A. Sloan a comment by Anonymous has led to the ship being positively identified as the George A Sloan. The Hill Annex was one of sixteen “Maritime Class” freighters that were built in 1943 for the United States Maritime Commission by the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Michigan. During the summer of 1943 the ship was rechristened the George A. Sloan and delivered to the Pittsburgh Steamship Company, which was owned by U.S. Steel. The ship was part of the U.S. Steel fleet for over 50 years until she was sold in 2001 to Lower Lakes Towing Ltd. of Port Dover, Ontario, Canada. The ship was renamed the Mississagi and continues to sail the Great Lakes. If you would like to learn more about the George A Sloan, please click here. Just a guess...Robert C. Stanley
I'll second the Stanley, although an argument might be made that the George A. Sloan might also be in the running.
I remember being along the Rock Cut up by the Soo in the summer of 1956 one lovely Summer evening and shining the spotlight from my dad's '55 Pontiac on the Stanley as she glided by. The Stanley returned the favor with her ship's spotlight and I was bathed in a real floodlight! She gave us a toot for kicks, too!!
Hi Guys,
The Robert C. Stanley had 15 sister ships! The most similar was the George A. Sloan. I think the ship in the photo is the George A. Sloan but it could just as easily be the Robert C. Stanley.
Cool story Rock!
There's no way to know if this is the Stanley or the Sloan. Note that the "billboard" on the side of the vessel reads "Pittsburgh Steamship Company". This dates the photo as late 1940's and prior to 1952, when the word "Company" was replaced with "Division."
this is the George A Sloan, not a doubt in my mind
Please see the number of letters on the bow, George A Sloan vs Robert C Stanley The last name is 5 letters on this picture
